"All Creatures Great & Small" Sunday 12th May 2013 11am-4pm

After sadly having to cancel last years event, "All Creatures Great & Small" is back! The event is being held on Sunday 12th May 11am-4pm at Ramsey Rural Museum. Come along and join in the fun! Don't forget to bring your four-legged canine friend as there's lots for you to do together; win prizes and rosettes at the fun dog show, have a go at agility, try your "paws" at flyball and test your dog's speed with a gundog scurry. Watch SIDTC strud their stuff in their dog display - many next year you and your dog could be part of the team? We have many other furry (and scaly) legs visiting too - horses, creepy-crawlies from Shepreth Wildlife Park, ferrets, small furries and owls. All proceeds go to charity and this year CVG are raising money for Medical Detection Dogs - a charity that tains dogs to help people with life-threatening health conditons, giving them greater independence and above all saving lives on a daily basis.

"I know an old lady who swallowed...."...we know a young dog who swallowed....

Chester, a one year old Labrador, from Huntingdon had to undergo surgery after he stole a toy from another dog on his walk and promptly swallowed it. Our vets Xrayed him to see the the outline of the toy frog staring back, (photo top right) and it unfortunately had to be surgically removed and Chester made a full recovery. But did he learn his lesson? About 6 weeks later Chester returned to us after his owners had taken him out for a walk and the same thing had happened. Chester met the same dog on his travels and once again stole its toy and swallowed it. Chester's owners brought him straight in to see us. This time the Xray showed the outline of the toy and surgery discovered a toy cow (photo bottom right). Chester has once again made a great recovery, our best wishes to Chester and his family.

Gemma finds hair-raising hairball hard to stomach!

Gemma, an 8 year old long-haired cat, was brought in to the surgery because she was very quiet and hadn't eaten much for 4-5 days. When the Vet examined her, she had a large lump in the front of her abdomen. Vet Sarah Xrayed and scanned Gemma using ultrasound to confirm that the lump was in the region of Gemma's stomach.

Gemma was taken into the care of Vet Neil who performed an exploratory operation, which revealed the lump was a large and solid hairball which was completely filling her stomach. Neil removed the hairball which weighed 214g and measured 12.5cm across.  No wonder Gemma was feeling extremely unwell, there was no way she could have cleared or passed it by herself! Although hairballs are relatively common in cats, our Vets have never seen one so big. Without a doubt Gemma's operation saved her life, she is now back at home and has made an excellent recovery.

Helpful tip! Most cats groom themselves regularly and may vomit small hairballs every week or two. It is important to comb/brush cats to remove as much dead hair as possible, particularly when they are moulting. If your cat resists grooming we can offer advice on hairball control diets and other products to help avoid large hairballs.
