The hospital’s central location in Huntingdonshire means it is ideally suited to provide 24hr emergency care. The team provide emergency care for sick or injured animals as well as ongoing treatment and care for our inpatients in the hospital. We have a vet and nurse on site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - so no matter what time of day or night it is, we’re here for you and your pet!
What to do in an emergency:
- Stay calm
- Be safe – please be aware of anything that could pose a danger to yourself or others. Please also remember that animals who are in pain may behave unpredictably and out of their nature, possibly scratching and/or biting. Please consult your GP if you are bitten or scratched.
- Phone us on 01480 52222 for veterinary advice and instruction.
What to expect from our emergency service
When you call our emergency service our team will talk to you about the emergency and advise whether your pet needs to come to our hospital for treatment immediately. They may also give you specific instructions of anything you can do to help your pet before reaching us.
Our emergency service operates outside of normal surgery opening hours and as such our doors are kept locked for security – when you arrive please press the intercom button next to the exit door and a member of our team will come to greet you. By phoning ahead, our team are aware of your pet’s emergency and are prepared for your arrival.
Our emergency service can be very busy and we must prioritise the most serious conditions. Please be aware, if our team are dealing with an urgent case at the time of your arrival, you may be asked to wait to be seen by the vet. Please rest assured our vet will be notified you have arrived and you will be seen as soon as possible.
Unsure if it’s an emergency?
Please call us immediately if your pet shows any of these signs:
- Breathing difficulty or choking
- Uncontrollable bleeding
- Constant vomiting or diarrhoea
- Seizure (fitting)
- Sudden stomach bloating
- Having difficulty whilst giving birth
- Suffered a trauma – such as road traffic accident or fall from height
- Eaten anything unusual – poisonings and ingested foreign bodies are best treated immediately. Please do not attempt to make your pet vomit at home, it could make their condition worse. Click here to see a list of common pet poisons.

Additional information
- Please always phone us first on 01480 52222. This allows our team to discuss your pet’s emergency, take a few details and prepare for your arrival at our hospital.
- If possible please bring any medications your pet is on and insurance details if appropriate.
- If your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, please bring any packaging or samples of the offending item. For example, the detergent bottle that they chewed, the leftover chocolate wrapper, the half destroyed toy, the medication bottle or the packaging from the rat poison. Please bring any possible information of anything poisonous you might have had access to if you are not sure.
- Due to the nature of out-of-hours work, there are additional charges for seeing a vet during this time.
